sustainable design principles - #1

We weren't to know then of the turning tide, but when living in rural Victoria just over 12 months ago, we were at the pointy end of a 10 year drought. Maximising water efficiency had become one of our main priorities.

A new garden was taking shape but the availability of water to use on the garden was limited. I saved this highly valued resource just for productive areas: the vegetable and herb gardens as well as the orchard. All other areas of the garden would have to survive on what fell from the heavens. I planted ornamental pears, which could withstand periods of drought, and grapes...both providing shade around the house. Garden buddies for these plants included the native rosemary, a fantastic deep red kangaroo paw, paper daisies and a dwarf silver tussock grass. I found the combination stunning...even better, it didn't require watering!

Living through this extended period of drought has instilled in me the need to be efficient with water use...particularly with the uncertainty of our changing climate.
