sustainable design principles - #3

opportunities to grow food
It’s not about replacing your ornamental garden with a productive one...rather, complementing it.
It’s also about designing opportunities for harvesting water from rooftops and using it to grow your own tasty treats.
I can’t tell you the joy I feel trotting out to the vegie patch to plan the evening meal. When I open that little wooden gate, I’m opening up an array of possibilities. The fact that I grew and provided all these choices myself is incredibly satisfying.
In my patch...chilli, capsicum (all colours), tomatoes, corn, onion, leek, beetroot, potatoes (some a little water-logged), beans (including the magnificent ‘King Purple’ runner), rhubarb, pumpkin, squash and of course....zucchini...lots of it! Not to mention a whole host of herbs.
Flavours are suddenly intense, colours more vivid...and trips to the supermarket few.
I have a wonderful strawberry patch and have been enjoying strawberry smoothies every other day, culminating in a small batch of strawberry jam last weekend. Totally satisfying...and delicious!
