plant of the month - october 2011

The display is only just beginning!
Bulbine bulbosa
Golden bulbine lily, Native leek

This native tufted perennial is one of the first plants I fell in love with when we arrived in Tassie two years ago.

It has long, grey-green fleshy leaves, with gorgeous bright yellow flowerheads on display from early spring to summer. A summer flowering alternative to the daffodil.

Growing to about 600mm in sun or part shade, it's both frost and drought tolerant. Cut it back almost to ground level as the foliage and flower stems die off.

Its leaves can be used as a chive substitute. I've added the chopped leaves to savory parmesan biscuits for pre-dinner nibbles...delicious!

I've propagated this beauty by division with some success, and more recently tried growing them from seed...still hoping they'll germinate! Alternatively, you'll find it at your local Tas native nursery. Also in Vic, NSW, Qld and SA.
