maximise the use of local and sustainably sourced materials
I need to consider the source of materials used in a landscape project for several reasons:
- using local materials (especially plants) where possible ensures a sense of place. The new landscape fits into its surrounds while supporting the local economy.
- less time, energy and money are consumed in transporting the material.
- materials are produced/harvested in a manner which is not detrimental to its source eg. river pebbles were not harvested from areas which would result in redirecting the course of a river; trees are managed to certified standards in the production of timber.
